Think Aloud- Ramtin Javanmardi

Think aloud evaluation

Task: Find a restaurant of your choice to go to.

User: Female, 23

Step 1:
The user starts the application and sees the intro screen but does nothing. “Am I supposed to do something? Maybe I should just tap it?”. She taps the screen and as designed the intro screen gives yield to the next frame.

Step 2:
The second page presents the setup for the profile/preferences concept of our application. Seems like this page is not something the user expected judging by her facial expression. “Should I set my preferences or just skip it? I mean anything I’m looking for will presumably be found in some sort of section for restaurants. Since I already know my preferences and the fact that these setups are usually tedious it will be best to just skip it.”

Step 3:
Once the user press skip she is presented with the main page and pressed the food button in a split second. “ How convenient that the food button was so easy to find, which just proved my earlier assumption correct.”

Step 4:
Here is the page that presents the user with the available restaurants. The user did a quick scroll through the list. “ too bad there is no option to sort based on my current location or on what type of food I want.”

Post task discussion
Q: How difficult was it to complete the given task?

A: It was really easy to find the section regarding restaurants thanks to the main page that had everything to clearly labelled and the labels where really intuitive.

Q: I saw that you skipped the setup process for your preferences, why?

A: that page did not explain the reason for the setup and past experiences with such setups deterred me from going through that process, I’m glad there was a skip button actually. In hindsight I can understand why that setup could be useful for someone that is going to use the application for more than just a test run but that second page needs to do a better job in conveying that.

Q: Any functionality you would have liked that the application lacked?

A: Yes, I noticed that the application seems to lack some kind of localization technique, something that is important if you want to know for example which restaurants are closest your current location and likewise for the other services offered.
